Ghulam Mustafa Mashori in his
article “Analyzing the Forms & Techniques of
Teaching Listening Comprehension” analyzes some forms and techniques who
appropriate to be taught to students. Actually when we talk about teaching of
listening, there is a question often appeared, i.e : is listening the most important part of teaching of
language so that it should be taught seriously or no? yes, listening has a big
function in language learning. According to psycholinguistic theory we have to
listen first before we talk. It means that we response what we hear through
speaking. Indeed, teaching of listening is often neglected with many reasons.
One of them is as the writer says in his article that listening skill can be
mastered automatically by accepting the environmental influence, Mckeating
(1981). Actually the main problem is this skill hard to be taught especially
for EFL learners. Thus, I think this article is really interesting to see. It
relates to the problem which is the forms and techniques should be chosen
accurately in teaching of listening.
Ghulam in his article explains that there is a difference between two level activities: recognition level and selection level, and he focuses to the listening and selection level. He argues that listening is an active process which phonological, grammatical, lexical and cultural system of language have to known in this process, while the cultural context cannot overemphasized into EFL situation.

In analyzing forms and techniques in
teaching of listening, Ghulam takes four stages which is suggested by Rivers
(1968). Those four stages is included into technique of teaching of listening
which is good to take it as a guidance. Also, he brings extensive and intensive
listening to be taught the teaching system and chooses authentic materials to
be taught the students.
In
his analyzing, ghulam states that the following forms and techniques
accompanied by all characteristics above is really good applied at Shah Abdul
Latif University students in listening comprehension especially at the
intermediate and advanced levels. The form is divided into three parts:
pre-listening, listening, and post-listening which is focused to the purpose
(listening comprehension). For techniques, Ghulam says that students should be
relax and not panic by giving topic and purpose clearly.
In
teaching of listening, actually it is not only about the choosing forms and
techniques, but also how the teacher can use those forms and techniques well in
classroom management. Often, we find that the teachers cannot brings and
explores it as well. Exactly, the teachers should understand their students so
that they can manage classroom well, and also they must have knowledge of
teaching as well.
Fortunately,
the form and techniques in Ghulam’s article is accurate and effective. Not only
in the university above, but also in other university or colleges in EFL
situation. Exactly, those forms and techniques have function to cover all in
teaching and learning strategy, include classroom management. Then, there is a
purpose clearly makes students comprehend the materials easily.
